Catwoman on the rooftops

Have you seen the new Batman movie everyone’s talking about lately ? Me I did it two days ago . It was quite good but for someone who is obsessed with Christopher Nolan’s Batman series and is a big fan of Christian Bale nothing seems possible to surpass it .

Photo : Panagiotis Kadigkos , Model : Eleni Kadigkou

We did this photo series with the usual suspect , my photographer Panagiotis Kadigkos over a month ago and felt right to correlate it with the movie . Zoe Kravitz nailed it as Catwoman , she is irresistible as Selena and once she appears in the scenes it seems almost impossible to take your eyes off of her .

Batman : Selena ,don’t throw your life away .

Catwoman : Don’t worry , honey . I got nine of ’em .

The Batman (2022)

The inspiration didn’t came from the movie , it was spontaneous and derived from the clothes and the location but the references are distinct .

Batman : You got a lot of cats .

Catwoman : I have a thing about strays .

The essential ingredient to create an atmosphere on films is music . The variety spans from Nirvana to Peggy Goo and from Schubert’s Ave Maria to Alesso and Frank Sinatra . The least I could characterize the soundtracks are ecstatic !

Nocturnal animals , an after-hours photo story

Photographer : Panagiotis Kadigkos

Borrowing Tom Ford‘s movie title our series of two different photo shootings we did with my photographer Panagiotis Kadigkos are going to be unfold as you scroll later on . The 2016 film is a neo-noir psychological film with Tom Ford’s distinctive signature and narrative skill based on Austin Wright’s novel Tony and Susan .

Photographer : Panagiotis Kadigkos

Two parallel stories occurred during the film , Susan an artgallery-owner receives a manuscript of a novel written by her ex-husband , the book named Nocturnal animals is inspired by the nickname her ex gave to her . In the novel , an unexpected event during a family road trip in West Texas disturbs the balances . The wife and daughters were kidnapped by two men in the middle of nowhere . Later the father is being informed by a policeman about their fate , the women had been raped and murdered .

Photographer : Panagiotis Kadigkos

Fortunately , our photo-story has no relation at all with the movie script . Just the title sounded appealing to me and I associated the events that took place in the streets late at night , referring to our photo shooting and the setting where the story of the novel unfolds .

Photographer : Panagiotis Kadigkos

Just be careful who you trust late at night , even your own eyes can betray you . Mythical figures and dreamy creatures can come to life , sometimes the borderline between illusions and reality is very thin .

“I’ve always preferred mythology to history. Because history is made up of truths which eventually turn into lies, while mythology is made up of lies that eventually become truths. ” Jean Cocteau

“And if I have the good fortune to live on in your minds, it would be in mythological form.” Jean Cocteau

Guy Bourdin inspired Polaroid project

Photos Panagiotis Kadigkos

Guy Bourdin’s legacy and contribution to the art of photography still have a major impact . The renowned photographer’s signature style , provocative and sensual , is a source of inspiration whenever it comes to fashion photo-shootings . He had the ability to shock with his images offering a totally new genre of photography . Woman’s legs , high heels and hosiery was recurring themes on his oeuvre . Our Polaroid project with my photographer Panagiotis Kadigkos triggered by one of those .

His vision breathe new life to Fashion photography , challenging the conventional image by adding bold colours and dramatic effects .

A late night spontaneous decision and only 16 polaroid films , ended up to the following result .

Women are not for sale.Zero tolerance toward any type of violence.Speak up.

In this post I am going to share with you a photo shooting we accomplished back in November 2020 and specifically on the 25th,which is the International Day for the elimination of violence against women. After the me Too movemet in US,the past few weeks there is a wave,in my country Greee, with a heap of accusations against high prolific names on the entertainment industry,in the fields of theatre,T.V. and movie productions but also they have been some reports about journalists.

Here on Escape Karma we show zero tolerance towards any type of violence, verbal, physical, sexual, psychological and not only against women(it was just the concept of the day and I was the available role model) but against homosexual and heterosexual men too and mainly we want to raise awareness about children abuse.

What came to the light of the publicity so far about what’s going on behind the curtains of the theatre or the auditions were shocking for some of us but it has been long whispered in the art world although never openly discussed.

The concept of the photo shooting conceived by me and my collaborator and photographer Panagiotis Kadigkos,he wrapped my face to the point which literally,I almost were able to breathe and my body so that I can barely be able to move.

In that way we were willing to approach the feelings of the victims,to get to know their psychology or the reason of their non-reaction,the fact that they feel paralyzed in front of their abuser,in order for me to be able to capture the expressions on the photos and try to put myself on their shoes. What we did we did it with respect, our intentions are to empower those people,to give a helping hand,to awake the society so as to speak up about the injustice when we become witnesses of unjustifiable phenomena.

Photos Panagiotis Kadigkos

The first question that comes to mind, not to everyone’s fortunately,is why now?Why the victim decided to speak his truth about the abuse after so many years?Well if life were kind with you and you’ve never experienced something like this before at least please try to understand them in depth.

But we are proud and standing by the side of those who find the strength and the courage to share their burden with us in order to ease their souls,to protect and empower others,to heal their traumas,to accept and love themselves and in the end to forgive their abuser for their own cracked psychology who lead them to the abhorrent action.

Photo Panagiotis Kadigkos

The act of speaking up is of utmost importance, not because society thirsts for gossip and intrigue and is always ready to devour and taunt the perpetrators, but mostly because this act can enable and offer the chance to other victims in order to take the decision and share their agonizing story.

It gets a lot of nerve to reveal something so painful and personal, this act though may prevent future incidents, could lead the victims to alleviate their long time trauma and last but not least it opens the way to accept and love themselves despite the harassment and the abuse they have experienced.

Hope my article and photo story not insult those affected and not underestimate the seriousness of the current situation concerning the accusations of harassment and abuse. There is also one more photo shooting,a little bit more shocking, soon to be published. What causes me deep saddens,is the fact that our society lost the ability to get shocked,we are so familiar to the violence that violence itself doesn’t upset us.

Feel free to contact me if there is something that I have to alter or if you have something to state.

“I only want to see you bathing in the purple rain” Photo shooting in the bath

To complete the following photo shooting it wasn’t that easy,I had to stay in the water for almost two hours while the temperature was dropping down and beside this I had to change three outfits inside the bath.

Photo Panagiotis Kadigkos

Both me and my photographer Panagiotis Kadigkos belong to the water element,my star sign is Cancer and his is Pisces,so we love photo shootings in the water,or close to lakes, rivers and sea.

Water is life,it’s the first environment we experience as a foetus and according to Darwin and his theories of evolution life originated on land(and not in the ocean) but in a warm little pond, thus aqua brought in life every single living organism.

Although our approach is more fashionably and influenced by Love Magazine issue 9 from Spring/Summer 2013,hosting Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne as its covers,we accomplished it with all the respect and gratitude to the water element.

How do you define time?An ode to Nomas Magazine,13th issue about time

Are you aware of the definition of the word nomad?Nomas magazine redefines the meaning in an artistic, alternative and lyricist approach. For 12 consecutive issues the magazine dedicated it’s covers and its content to cities around the world,it offered us its unique perception of hidden gems through photography, art and writing all well combined into a cultural mix to make us feel the need to travel and have a more deeper look on the places we visit.

Nomas Issue No11 on the left,Issue No10 the anniversary one on the right

But Issue no 13,a number not accidental at all,was published under totally different conditions due to the pandemic, the restrictions on travelling and the confinement and isolation at home. What also changed in Nomas latest issue is the title and the content, their theme is Time and its association with art.The latest issue offers a deep dive into the contemporary art world with artworks related to time, existing ones or projects the magazine asked the artists to create.

Some of our favourites here on E.K.

From left to right 1.Ariana Papademetropoulos (courtesy the artist and Vito Schnabel Gallery) 2.Maria Hassabi,Dusseldorf 2018(courtesy The Breeder, Athens) 3.Wolfgang Tillmans,Zero Gravity IV,2001 4.Pantelis Chandris,Fossils (commissioned for NOMAS magazine) 5.Mike Kelley,Brown Star 1991(Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts/Osdeete,Greece; photo Nie Tenwiggenhor) 6.Alexis Vassilikos,Fountain 2019,courtesy of Can Christina Androulidaki Gallery)

But beside the contribution of the Greek and international artists, among them the legends Maurizio Cattelan and Jeff Koons, this journey across the contemporary art accomplished thank to the participation of the DESTE Foundation of Dakis Joannou and the artistic director of the New Museum in New York Massimiliano Gioni. In its pages you will discover new lands and you will visit new places but this time the journey is imaginary through Art,texts and interesting interviews among the highlights is the interview of my personal favourite Greek conductor with an international career Teodor Currentzis.

Here our artistic approach on the NOMAS 13.The photographer,Panos Kadigkos captured the images and also assisted me on the art direction.

“Listen, speech is old age’s wisdom And time fiery sculptor of men And the sun hanging over as a beast of hope And you, closer to it ,tighten some love Having a bitter taste of tempest on the lips.”

Marina of the Rocks,Odysseas Elytis

To think of time—of all that retrospection!

To think of to-day, and the ages continued henceforward!

To think of time , Walt Whitman
Photo,Panos Kadigkos

Time present and time past

Are both perhaps present in time future,

And time future contained in time past.

If all time is eternally present

All time is unredeemable.

What might have been is an abstraction

Remaining a perpetual possibility

Only in a world of speculation.

What might have been and what has been

Point to one end, which is always present.

T.S. Eliot

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

Come gather ’round people, wherever you roam

And admit that the waters around you have grown

And accept it that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you is worth saving

Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone

For the times, they are a-changin’

Bob Dylan,The times they are A-changin’

Within you, your years are growing; within me, my years are prowling.Time is resolute,we do not hear it toll; it grows and roams within us,it appears,a bottomless well,ln our gaze, at the corner of your burnt-chestnut eyes a filamentthe course of a diminutive river,a shooting star streaking toward your lips.Time adds its threads to your hair, but in my heart your honeysuckle fragrance is living fire. It is beautiful,as we have done, to grow old living life to the full. Each day was transparent stone, each night for us an inky rose,so this wrinkle on your face, or mine, is a stone, a flower, the memory of the lightning’s flash. My eyes have burned out in your beauty, but you are my eyes.I perhaps exhausted your breasts beneath my kisses, but the world knows your secret splendor in my happiness. Love, what does it matter that time, the very time that raised two flames, two waving heads of wheat, my body and your gentleness, tomorrow will hold them safe or mill the grain, and with those same unseen fingers erase the identities that separate us,giving us the final victory of being one beneath the ground. Pablo Neruda,Ode to Time

Backstage Photo, Panos Kadigkos while shooting

In this there is no measuring with time, a year doesn’t matter, and ten years are nothing. Being an artist means: not numbering and counting, but ripening like a tree, which doesn’t force its sap, and stands confidently in the storms of spring, not afraid that afterward summer may not come. It does come. But it comes only to those who are patient, who are there as if eternity lay before them, so unconcernedly silent and vast. I learn it every day of my life, learn it with pain I am grateful for: patience is everything!Rainer Maria Rilke,Letters to a young poet

In addition because of the fact that I happened to be their first reader of the region Kilkis (currently due to the pandemic I’m staying here until I get back to Athens) they sent me as a gift the Moscow issue. In order to thank them we did a special photoshooting, which would be revealed soon.

You can learn more about Nomas Magazine here shop the issue here and follow them on Instagram and Facebook.

Thank you for taking the time to read the article. We live in an era where we consume tons of images and with each one feels like time disintegrated, let’s select carefully what to keep and what to discard.

An imaginary trip to Japan ; Through the eyes of Noguchi Takashi and his Leica

Today our steps will lead us to the country of The Rising Sun , an imaginary trip to Tokyo, Japan through the lens of the renowned Japanese photographer Noguchi Takashi .

But before I share with you his captivating pictures from his country Japan let me introduce him to you .Noguchi Takashi’s portfolio is pretty rich and spans from fashion editorials and campaigns to portraits of notable artists such as musicians ,Thom Yorke and his band Radiohead (my favourite band ) , Marilyn Manson or (also actor and director) like Vincent Gallo , to experimental photography ;he was the one who captivated Radioactive contamination in Fukushima, Japan cause of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident by Big Tsunami and also to has shot the first cover back in 1998 of the legendary Fashion Magazine Purple (issue 1)

Top models like Lilly Collins and Linda Evangelista have been captured by Noguchi Takashi ,we can also spot Thom Yorke photographed by Noguchi back in 1997 in the gallery above All photos are courtesy of © Takashi Noguchi and Copyright © 2016 San Drago All Rights Reserved.

Noguchi turned radiation into art , his photos became an exhibition titled Stigma back in 2014 . He captured the radioactive contamination in Fukushima, Japan cause of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident by Big Tsunami .As he stated “I tried to visualize the radiation .I tried radiation sensitization using the soil contaminated with radiation for the photographed form or the unshot film . There are like a kiln strange . Some pictures look just like a flame, and some pictures seemed to be shining stars, radiation is invisible and horrible . But visualizing it is beautiful . Fearing that gap, I think radiation can be art.”

Noguchi tried to visually capture the invisible radiation in his photographs from Fukushima by wrapping them in dark bags with radioactive soil.

The following pictures were taken with Noguchi’s Leica M6 (a rangefinder film camera ) , we would like to thank him for sharing his astonishing photos with us exclusively from Japan .

There is pleasure’s sigh, there is despair’s sigh,

Adorned with a sweet smile or a sour cry,

Screaming both in the night with no reply,

Under the glamorous buildings up high,

Streets are flowing rivers of gleamy light,

Lit-neon signs glowing at every sight,

Under the glamorous buildings up high,

Who are standing under the blue night sky.
