An imaginary trip to Japan ; Through the eyes of Noguchi Takashi and his Leica

Today our steps will lead us to the country of The Rising Sun , an imaginary trip to Tokyo, Japan through the lens of the renowned Japanese photographer Noguchi Takashi .

But before I share with you his captivating pictures from his country Japan let me introduce him to you .Noguchi Takashi’s portfolio is pretty rich and spans from fashion editorials and campaigns to portraits of notable artists such as musicians ,Thom Yorke and his band Radiohead (my favourite band ) , Marilyn Manson or (also actor and director) like Vincent Gallo , to experimental photography ;he was the one who captivated Radioactive contamination in Fukushima, Japan cause of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident by Big Tsunami and also to has shot the first cover back in 1998 of the legendary Fashion Magazine Purple (issue 1)

Top models like Lilly Collins and Linda Evangelista have been captured by Noguchi Takashi ,we can also spot Thom Yorke photographed by Noguchi back in 1997 in the gallery above All photos are courtesy of © Takashi Noguchi and Copyright © 2016 San Drago All Rights Reserved.

Noguchi turned radiation into art , his photos became an exhibition titled Stigma back in 2014 . He captured the radioactive contamination in Fukushima, Japan cause of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident by Big Tsunami .As he stated “I tried to visualize the radiation .I tried radiation sensitization using the soil contaminated with radiation for the photographed form or the unshot film . There are like a kiln strange . Some pictures look just like a flame, and some pictures seemed to be shining stars, radiation is invisible and horrible . But visualizing it is beautiful . Fearing that gap, I think radiation can be art.”

Noguchi tried to visually capture the invisible radiation in his photographs from Fukushima by wrapping them in dark bags with radioactive soil.

The following pictures were taken with Noguchi’s Leica M6 (a rangefinder film camera ) , we would like to thank him for sharing his astonishing photos with us exclusively from Japan .

Oh, tranquility!

Penetrating the very rock,

A cicada’s voice.

Oh, when you're big in Japan, tonight
Big in Japan, be tight

But I have no doubt
One day, we are gonna get out
Tonight maybe we're gonna run
Dreaming of the Osaka sun
Ohh ohh...
Dreaming of when the morning comes

In a world they forgot

Lives the heart of me

A part that just won’t die

Just a boy, not a man

Sent to war, in a land

But I felt like a hired hand

Sometimes I have to find my way

Sometimes I have to get away

There is pleasure’s sigh, there is despair’s sigh,

Adorned with a sweet smile or a sour cry,

Screaming both in the night with no reply,

Under the glamorous buildings up high,

Who are standing under the blue night sky.

All places of Tokyo change at night,

Streets are flowing rivers of gleamy light,

Lit-neon signs glowing at every sight,

Under the glamorous buildings up high,

Who are standing under the blue night sky.

Sometimes this happens
the wait becomes unbearable
so remember that you know….
time is deceptive
and it’s already tomorrow in Tokyo

Here a playlist I did for you to hear while you are mentally visiting Japan .

Hope you enjoyed the imaginary trip to Tokyo ,Japan that Noguchi Takashi offered us through his lens . I am thankful for the images he shared with me and by extension with you and all his politeness and his guidance through the process .

Tatiana Verstraeten’s masterpieces are the jewelries you need to shine bright this christmas ,how a pupil of Karl Lagerfeld’s redefine the Haute Joaillerie

First of all I would like to thank Tatiana Verstraeten and her press team for the trust they’ve shown me and send me the original images and the information required to write this article .

Tatiana Verstraeten ,herself is the epitome of elegance and fragile beauty , how her creations couldn’t reflect this ?Her jewelries demonstrate sophistication and artisan virtuosity , in her first collection we can spot references to the 20’s but with a modern and contemporary twist .

Tatiana Verstraeten Jewelry , Stars Collection , Ear cuff made with 18k gold and diamonds

Tatiana studied Business Management , but she grew up among her mother’s atelier , who happens to be a doctor and an artist too . She first helped Maison Michel (my personal favourite Couture millinery ) to establish their luxurious hat brand , then she met up with Anthony Vacarello ,a young promising designer back then with a brilliant career now . However, it was her assignment to Chanel as an accessories and jewelries designer , which mend to be the milestone to her career . She had the chance to be a pupil and a close one of the long-time legendary Chanel’s designer Karl Lagerfeld , both star sign is Virgo , perfection , precision and high aesthetics are characteristics of their work .

It was in 2018 when she decided that her collaboration with Chanel gave her all the qualifications to establish her own brand in the jewelry industry .Fortunately for us , in January 2019 , Tatiana launched her eponymous fine jewelry collection at 24 Place Vendôme in Paris .Her signature and remarkable piece the “Diamonds Rain” fringe earrings caught the attention and was revealed at British Vogue . But soon gain the recognition and the respect of the experts in the profession of fine jewelry and craftmanship .

Diamonds Rain Fringe Earrings made with 18k gold and diamonds , Stars Collection

Her creations draw inspiration from the intangible ,from a movement around her or the nature as she has stated on her interviews . Here on Escape Karma her fringe earrings offered us an imaginary travel to the desert of Atacama and the rain of stars , and because it’s Christmas time it also remind us of the snowy winter wonderland of the Niagara Falls in Canada .

I have no other star. You are my replica
of the multiplying universe.

Your wide eyes are the only light I know
from extinguished constellations;
your skin throbs like the streak
of a meteor through rain.

Sonnet XVI , Pablo Neruda

Tatiana Verstraeten has not only came to stay but to leave her own mark and signature on the fine jewelry world .Her innovations in craftmanship and her unique style and perceptiveness are distinctive on her creations .Once you look at her pieces of art you can’t get over them , they leave you speechless of their spectacular artistry .

Tatiana Verstraeten on her Own Stars , Fringe Earrings

Her high aesthetics didn’t stay secret for a long time , her jewelries caught the attention of renowned stylists around the world , and we spoted artists and celebrities choosing her creations on the red carpet . Some notable names to refer among them is Cate Blanchett , Emma Watson, Emilia Clarke and the list goes on .

Daisy Ridley wearing Tatiana Verstraeten Jewelry on the red carpet

Nevertheless Tatiana beside her creative personality demonstrates an activistic and philanthropic character .She has a 3year partneship with UN Women France , an organization who focus on gender equality and the empowerment of woman , her brand also participated in the “Creatives for Lebanon ” a jewelry auction along with Sotheby’s to support and rebuild Lebanon . More about those actions and also for the upcoming ones you check here .

Her Jewelery atelier located at 24 Place Vendôme ,( for the connoisseurs ),the epicenter of French high jewelry. To visit her space and have a private meeting you need to book an appointment first . Due to Covid-19 and the strict health policies in France her physical shop is temporarily closed . But you can shop online her signature pieces on her website here or at Moda Operandi .

Let’s pay homage to this otherworldly and cosmic beauty , Tatiana Vesrtraeten’s Jewelries .

The Stars , the stars nobody watch the stars …

Stars , Monsieur Minimal

Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night over the Rhone is one of the greatest paintings he created during his life , we value Tatiana’s gemstones in a corresponding level .

I wish you ‘ll always be the one
The one that you will always smile
I watch the stars every night
I see them shining into your eyes Cause you, you are the one
You are the sweetest part of my life
My world is you
Cause you live in stars

My World is you , Monsieur Minimal

“Your arms start from the back because they were once wings .”

Martha Graham (ballet dancer and choreographer )

My favourite of all is the polaroid above , I own a polaroid camera too and I love to capture moments and feelings that you can’t reproduce again , and the Barbara Set that displays because of my personal engagement with ballet .This red-carpet creation, that took more than a year to complete, is inspired by the vibrant costumes of the Opera-ballet and the theatrical French singer of the same name.

That was an ode to the Haute Joaillerie of Tatiana Verstraeten . She redefines the jewelry industry with her ground-breaking ideas that come to life through the craftmanship , as all the innovative designers and pioneers do .

Muses Estate is a Greek winery lying in the valley of the muses , a tribute to their wines and how one of them related to the myth of Ulysses and Polyphemus

Photos Panagiotis Kadigkos

At the north-west of Athens, in the region of Viotia, lies the Valley of the Muses, formed on the slopes of Mount Helicon by the short course of the river Permissos on its way to the sea. In ancient times, the idyllic scenery of the valley was home of the 9 Muses, daughters of Zeus, and of Hesiod, one of the greatest poets of ancient Greece, who was born and wrote his works in ancient Askra, a city “rich in grapes” as it was called at that time, the modern Askri. This is the place where the vineyards of the Muses Estate lie.

Valley of Muses

On the slopes of Mount Helicon, grapevines find the perfect soil to grow, while the cold currents of air coming down from the mountain create the right mesoclimate for the production of wines with character and typicity .

The Winery established in 1946 by Nikolaos Zaharias , his son Mr Athanasios Zaharias entered the business and implemented innovations, currently run by its third generation Nikos, Stelios and Panayiotis . Nowadays it is a modern and updated one which stands to the expectations of the 21st century .

Photo Panagiotis Kadigkos

All their vineyards located in the Valley of the Muses, an area ideal for vine growing . Nowadays the vineyards that are cultivated are more than 50 hectares. The climate is characterized by mild, wet winters and dry summers, with long periods of sunshine. The vineyards are located at an altitude between 450 and 520 m and have a slope between 5 and 10% . Under those factors that affect the mircro-climate of the vineyard and in combination with the management of the wine makers the varities they cultivate find their best expressions .Among them are the white varieties, Assyrtiko, Savatiano, Malagousia, Roditis, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Robola and Trebbiano , and the red, Mouhtaro , Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Grenache Rouge.

There is one though that it is extremely special for them ; the Greek variety Mouhtaro ,one of the rarest Greek red grape varieties, which is found exclusively in the Valley of the Muses . This is because this varietal still exists thanks to the efforts of Nicolaos and Athanasios Zaharias, who insisted on cultivating Mouhtaro vines when all the other growers were replacing it with better yielding varieties. In Muses Estate they have great trust in the potential of Mouhtaro and of the other indigenous grapes. Their focus will always be on these varieties because they believe that only they can reflect the climate and the soil of the Greek vineyard and the passion of the people producing quality Greek wine.

Image Eleni Kadigkou

The interesting fact behind the variety of Mouhtaro is its relation to the epic of Homer Odyssey, it is said that the wine that Ulysses gave to the Polyphemus , one of the Cyclopes , must come from Mouhtaro .

Ulysses Giving Wine to Polyphemus ,John Flaxman ,Tate Britain

I will leave you links at the end of the article to learn more about the winery ,its heritage and winemaking .It’s Christmas time so let’s celebrate and enjoy their exceptional wines . Although I am a certified sommelier I avoided to write descriptions that include terms hard to understand for you . I used my other property as a photo-model and art director and set a festive photoshooting for Muses Estate wines .

The wines of the Muses Estate can easily find their way to your festive table , but nevertheless they are appropriate for all year round .

In case that you were looking for Christmas presents there are plenty of options the winery can offer . Their beautifully designed and crafted bottles in combination with the unique flavours and aromas of the wines it is the epitome for a festive gift .

Photos Panagiotis Kadigkos

This year the Holidays may be different from the previous ones , but my wish for you is to be safe , healthy and spend them with those who truly matters for you ! And don’t forget to drink wines !

I would like to thank Muses Estate for the wines and especially Mr Stelios Zacharias .

Had one or two random successes but then you feel like “you hit a wall” ? Why dedication and hard work are not always the keys to productivity .

Have you ever find yourself to this position ? You try to give the best of you everyday , you work hard , you are dedicated , most of the time you are thinking about your tasks and your projects but in the end you feel something’s missing and you don’t get the reward you were expecting . Let’s face it “burnout ” is a phenomenon of the contemporary societies .But how to avoid reaching this point ? Let’s discuss this matter below .

Photo by Anna Tarazevich on Pexels.com

If you happened to feel mental , physical and emotion exhaustion , and you suffer from excessive and prolonged stress , you are probably dealing with burnout .Additionally if you begin to lose the interest and motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place and your productivity and energy has been reduced you are already overworked .But how the steps you have been taking led you to this point so far ?

Normally , when you begin new things or the job of your dreams , even you are a freelancer or not , you are enthusiastic , full of energy and ideas , you see the big picture , that of the recognition of the hard work you are willing to do . You are young and lack of sleep , skipping meals or eating junk food doesn’t affect you , dedication for you is the most important in the road of success even if you have to sacrifice the carefree moments with your beloved ones or the hobbies and activities that you used to enjoy before .

Photo by Anna Tarazevich on Pexels.com

Burnout is a gradual process , if you are able to spot the signs and the ringing bells you may prevent a major breakdown .But to reverse the situation you need to first recognize it and then build your resilience . Balance is the key every time , as the ancient Greek philosophers used to say “Everything in moderation ” . Lately , we are facing a pandemic and many of us are forced to work from home but there are people that were already doing so , and this can even been convenient and flexible or lead you to work in an excess degree without following any program .

Photo by Anna Tarazevich on Pexels.com

However having a program and having a routine are not always synonyms . Following a schedule means to adjust to the needs and demands of each day ,knowing where to stop and where to begin , fulfil your tasks on time ,have some proper rest and taking quality breaks , in addition keeping a schedule on your sleep and meals included .On the other hand routine stands for repeating the same day like nothing changed from the previous one ,following a pattern of behaviour that becomes habitual , doing work in a monotonous and unchallenging way which lack of surprising .

And even if you happened to have one or two random successes amid this condition you may again feel the lack of motivation for your career and by extension for your personal life too . Finding yourself caught in a trap , returning back to the hard work and your old patterns , ending feeling that your effort is unvalued . But how once we are in the deep water we can find the way back ? By changing the frame and reconsidering our strategy .

Images Panagiotis Kadigkos

Let’s see some options we have in order to reverse it

  • Re-examine the object of your profession ,maybe it’s not yourself to blame but the nature of your occupation that doesn’t satisfy you anymore ,maybe it’s time to switch field of work
  • If you used to love your job try to remember the days that you were” on fire” and thriving, you need to restore that feeling back and the manners you followed
  • Write down at least for a week a diary , what time you wake-up ,sleep ,work, eat ,your tasks and deadlines , then examine it thoroughly and spot what doesn’t work in order to discard it
  • Be realistic and objective , ask help from your colleagues or closed ones or if it’s possible take a distance and take a look of your manners as an external observer
  • Plan new strategies and apply them until you have the one that works better
  • Less is more , is a fashion quote but can find its application in many fields , work less hours but focus on specific projects ,by this way you can increase your productivity
  • Take some time off , for vacations , your loved ones , let yourself indulge in delights
  • Keep a balanced diet and exercise on a weekly schedule , even if you go only for stretching your body will be thankful of it

To sum up , in case that you are dealing with issues like those I’ve just mentioned , motivate yourself to take the steps that can relieve stress and burnout. I am not an expert ; however my article based on observation of people in my environment and the observation of my patterns and forms too . Believe me I used to be the queen of procrastination , even though I knew the solution in issues that I was facing I find it hard to take decisions or force my self to organize and follow schedules . But eventually , I abandoned some of my old habits and replace them with more productive ones . As Rolling Stones sing “old habits die hard ” but once you break them and substitute with more efficient for you , you will never go back .

Hope you ‘ll find it useful , if you have any personal experience on the matter , please share your advices with us .Till next time .

Jenny Saville’s exhibiton “Elpis” at Gagosian draws inspiration from Greek mythology , look how we reply

Only Elpis [Hope] was left within her unbreakable house,
she remained under the lip of the jar, and did not
fly away. Before [she could], Pandora replaced the
lid of the jar. This was the will of aegis-bearing
Zeus the Cloudgatherer.
—Hesiod, Works and Days

Gagosian’s New York gallery reopened on November 12th 2020 after the pandemic-related shutdown in March displaying a not at all incidental exhibition but an extremely relevant .Jenny Saville’s exhibition titled “Elpis” stands for Hope in Greek and finds its roots at the ancient Greek poet Hesiod and its poem Work and days related to the myth of Pandora .

During her career the viewer has encountered clear references on Greek mythology . Her oeuvre draws inspiration from archaic Greek and classical sculptures , and how it couldn’t ? Jenny Saville is known for her large-scale painted depictions of nude bodies especially obese women whereas her radical techniques challenged the art world , and many times on her work we encounter the ambiguity of gender .

Her contribution to the contemporary figurative painting is pivotal , such as Egon Schiele was in the early 20th century . Back on 2014 Kunsthaus Zurich presented an exhibition displaying artworks of both of them , it was a dialogue among two artists who pay homage to the human body , they have a unique way of depicting it but also self-portray themselves quite often . In that exhibition paintings were imbued with eroticism , distinctive characteristic of both of their paintings . Jenny has been asked in an interview about that matter and declared the following :”It has become more and more important, I would say. Instead of erotic in a sexual sense, I would say erotic in a life force or drive.”

But on “Elpis” Saville forget for a while the bodies and focusing on portraying faces . A visit to Moscow , had her fascinated by people’s faces there , with no hesitation she booked a studio there and worked with photographs of the models she found more appropriate for this project .The vivid colour palette and the brushstrokes , the childish-like depiction of the faces , the innocence and the hope are so evident on the eyes of her portraits . You can profoundly feel that optimism and the gaze on the bright future .

The first painting I saw from the exhibition was Second Nature , 2020 and it literally hit me and blew my mind . Along with my collaborator photographer who has also drawing and painting skills we addressed the project of depict Jenny Saville’s work .He painted my face , took pictures and edited them . The result may seems not so close to her artworks but we wanted to make an ode to her astonishing work and pay homage to that woman , who is a living legend.

“Le Chateau Des Dames “Chanel Metiers D’art 2020/21 Fashion Show Review

For 18 consecutive years the month of December is entwined with Chanel Metiers D’art Show . Τhe previous years this collection would travel around the world , who can get over shows like Paris-Salzburg , Paris-Dallas or Paris-New York ? But we are facing a pandemic and travelling seems like a science fiction scenario , under those specific and strict circumstances the emblematic fashion house decided to have the show in Paris and with one and only guest , a Chanel ambassador so far Kristen Stewart .

Kristen Stewart

This year ,on the 3rd of December ,the show of the 2020/21 Métiers d’art collection was held at the Château de Chenonceau, located in the Loire Valley and also known as “Le Château des Dames” . The location was perfectly selected , because of its link and resemblance with some of the emblematic characteristics of Chanel fashion house and Gabriel Chanel herself , such as the double CC , the lion favourite symbol of Coco and her star sign also , the black and white .Catherine de’ Medici’s , (was among the notable women residents of the castle ) emblem was a monogram composed of two intertwined Cs, just like that of Chanel . Inside the building there are some tapestries displaying representations with lions and in the garden there are sculptures of the king of the animals . In the large hall where the collection presented , the black and white chequered motif on the floor was reminiscent of a life-size game of checkers, black and white has been Chanel’s signature so far . Photos were taken by the super talented and pioneer fashion and fine arts photographer Juergen Teller .

For this collection Chanel enlisted some of her long-time collaborators and pay homage to their skills of artisan , like Massaro for the shoes , my personal favourite Maison Michel for the exceptional hats ,embroiderers from Lesage and Atelier Montex .

What is obvious once you observe the outfits is the reference and the ode to the renaissance era , since the early years of the castle , but beautifully harmonized with a rock and punk attitude related to the modern era . The collar and the lace, the delicate patterns and the jewellery on the curly hairs bring memories of a past era but the dynamic black dresses , the eye-make up , the rock twist on the accessories are related to the woman of the 21st century .

In a further reading we begin to isolate and spot the trends of the collection . The fascinating hats , the outstanding belts ,some of them had embroidery of the facet of the castle ,the mini bags , the off shoulder dresses .

Another highlight of the show was the magnificent and avant-garde soundtrack selected by the fashion’s leading sound director Michel Gaubert .

Our applause to Virginie Viard for the Metiers D’Art 2020/21 collection . She managed to respond to the contemporary era and to the current circumstances while pandemic is still an invisible enemy , the isolated castle , the return at “home ” in this case the show was held domestic , the one and only guest but also the excellent quality of streaming and how they organized the “digital” invitations for the guests . Concerning the fashion facts , the mixture of past and present is harmonized , the woman of this collection gazes at the bright future , she lives in the present moment but her spirit and roots are connected to the past .
